The capital of Campania is the destination of numerous cruises and is visited every year by thousands of tourists who are fascinated by its beauty and its strong contrasts. The city that was founded, according to legend, by the siren Partenope and its surroundings deserve to be visited calmly in several days, but when you have little time you have to make choices. That’s why we decided to help you understand which are the best shore excursions to do in Naples.
Let’s start with the most classic of shore excursions in Naples: the visit to its historic center. This is the solution we suggest you too, especially if it is the first time you visit the city.
There are many things to see: among the beautiful Neapolitan museums, the magnificent and fascinating churches in the historic center, the emblematic places of one of the most famous cities in the world and the desire to taste a pizza there is really the risk of getting lost!
Our suggestion is to follow step by step our one day itinerary in Naples: in this way you will have the opportunity to discover the most beautiful places and symbols of the city.
We also suggest you to take advantage of our traditional food tour through the streets of Naples: thanks to a local guide, in fact, you will not only have the opportunity to taste the best dishes of the local cuisine, but also the opportunity to visit the historic center and learn about its history and many interesting curiosities.
Alternatively, if you are greedy, consider the Naples Street Food Tour: between the pizza a wallet, the famous cuoppo and the babà you will discover the most authentic Naples!
The second shore excursion from Naples that we recommend is definitely a visit to the Archaeological Excavations of Pompeii.
Pompeii was buried in 79 A.D. by the eruption of Vesuvius which crystallized the lives of thousands of people in an eternal photograph. Because of that immense tragedy, everything has remained as it was then and today walking through the ancient streets of Pompeii means taking a step back in time: it’s easy to understand why this site attracts tourists from every corner of the globe.
Inside you can visit ancient villas whose frescoes are still intact and brightly colored, Roman workshops, an amphitheater, the forum, the necropolis and even an ancient pleasure house.
Not far from Pompeii there is another of the most interesting archaeological sites in the area: that of Herculaneum.
This ancient city was also completely submerged by the debris of the 79 A.D. eruption and, although the site is smaller than the nearby Pompeii, it is well preserved. This visit literally makes you travel with your imagination, leading you to imagine what life must have been like here at the time.
From Herculaneum it is easy to reach Vesuvius, the true symbol of Naples.
Inside the Vesuvius National Park you can go into some interesting hiking trails surrounded by the typical “macchia Mediterranea”, but the advice we give you is to reach the mouth of the crater: the emotion is strong and the view unique!
Among the shore excursions to do in Naples we also recommend a tour of the Amalfi Coast, one of the most particular stretches of coast in Italy.
Here 14 locations follow one after the other, from Positano to Vietri. Each small village has its own unique and particular charm. The most beautiful is probably Amalfi, a town that also gives its name to the whole stretch of coast. The most famous monument of this town is certainly the Duomo.
In addition to Amalfi, however, we advise you to include in your itinerary also Positano, with its colorful houses that seem to be set in the rock and Vietri sul Mare, famous all over the world for the production of porcelain.
To visit the Amalfi Coast in one day you could take advantage of a guided bus tour or, during the summer, a boat trip: in both cases you would have time to visit some of the most important towns on foot.
Finally, another day trip from Naples that we suggest is the one to Sorrento, not far from the Amalfi Coast.
The centre of Sorrento is small, but there are many things to see: you can start from the Cathedral and take a walk to Marina Grande. During the summer you can take advantage of it for a swim in the small but nice St. Francis Beach.
From Marina Piccola, the port of Sorrento, there are numerous boat trips to the caves of the Sorrento Coast, to the Amalfi Coast or to the nearby island of Capri: some excursions last the whole day, but others will take you only a couple of hours and could be a great way to discover the area in a short time.
We hope to have left you some good tips to choose your shore excursion in Naples. We are waiting for you to take you to discover the historic center of the city and its most delicious typical dishes!
