5 reasons to participate in a food tour in Venice

Venice is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and certainly one of the most romantic. While visiting the Venetian capital you can get lost among the canals and the calli that sneak into the magnificent palaces. When you are in Venice you are always tempted to follow the flow of tourists to visit the most famous places of the city (San Marco and Rialto among all) or to leave the usual routes to discover a more authentic and lived city. Our advice is to do both, maybe taking part in a food tour! What could be better, indeed, than discovering the city through its habits and its simplest gestures, such as those related to cooking? In this post we explain the 5 reasons why it’s really worth taking part in a food tour in Venice!

1.       Discover the Venice of the Bacari

To discover the most authentic Venice, the one lived by its inhabitants, you have to enter at least one of its bacari!

These small and cozy taverns are a real concentration of stories: the innkeeper serves drinks to customers who meet here, every evening, for an aperitif. A counter, few seats and a wide choice of wines and appetizers (the famous Venetian cicheti): that’s what a bacaro really is.

Once inside you will immediately notice that Venetians prefer to stay close to the counter to chat with the host and to order more easily. Most likely you will do the same… attracted by the sight of the delicious cicheti! The bacari cuisine, in fact, is still the authentic one, the simple one, the one of the past… and to resist it is impossible!

Thanks to our Food Tour In Venice you will have the chance to discover the best Venetian taverns with a local and expert guide: what better way to get to know the real local cuisine?

2.       You will get in touch with the most entertaining gastronomic traditions of the Veneto region.

During the gastronomic tour, then, you will get in touch with the true culinary tradition of Venice and taste the cicheti that are served inside the famous bacari.

But what are these cicheti really? We could call them “Venetian tapas” or, if we want to say it in English, the “Venetian finger food”: cicheti are small samples of local delicacies. So, during the food tour in Venice you can taste the crostini with sardines in saor or with “baccalà mantecato” (salt cod), but also the excellent mozzarella in carrozza and the marinated anchovies. In short, it will be a real treat!

A real aperitif, however, is always accompanied by something to drink. This is where the innkeeper once again enters the scene: the bacari, in fact, were initially nothing more than simple wine shops. Today the choice is still very wide and choosing the “ombre” (shade) (the small glass of wine, as it is called here) to accompany the cicheti is never easy. If you are undecided, you can always opt for a Spritz!

3.       Taste the real Spritz

Did you know that one of the most famous cocktails in the world was born in Veneto?

In 1800, during the Austrian domination, Habsburg soldiers began to familiarize themselves with wines from Veneto, but these were too strong for their habits. So they began to dilute them with sparkling water. The name Spritz, in fact, derives from the German verb “spritzen” which means “to spray”.

In short, at the origin of this cocktail there is one of the most sacrilegious practices for every lover of good wine!

Over time the recipe changed: first came the Seltz instead of sparkling water and, finally, the Aperol. But watch out, there are still parts of Veneto where if you order the Spritz they will still bring you the “white” version, the one with sparkling water!

Now you know the story of one of the most famous Italian cocktails, the one that has become one of the symbols of Milan’s aperitif, the one that, of course, you won’t have to miss in the lagoon city!

Our food tour in the Venetian capital always starts in the late afternoon, so you can start your evening in Venice in the most fun way!

4.       Make new acquaintances

Among the most beautiful experiences you will have during a gastronomic tour in Venice there is certainly the encounter with other people who, like you, not only love good food, but also want to know a place in its soul and its authenticity.

Who participates in a food tour is not only a person who loves to eat and drink well, but also a curious, attentive traveler interested in getting in real contact with the place he/she is visiting.

During our food tours there are never more than 10 participants: we want to give you the opportunity to make new acquaintances and make friends.

You know, at the table we are all increasingly well-disposed and cheerful and starting to chat will not be difficult.

5.       Explore the historic district of Cannaregio

Finally, one of the five reasons why we want to recommend you to take part in our Food Tour in Venice is the chance to discover one of its most beautiful districts: Cannaregio.

If you have more days to spend in the city, for example if you can visit Venice in 3 days, after having been to the most famous places like Rialto and St. Mark’s Square, our advice is to dedicate yourself to explore the most hidden city, the one of the less beaten sestieri.

With our gastronomic tour we will take you to Cannaregio where you will discover the Jewish Ghetto and immerse yourself in a relaxed atmosphere that seems light years away from the noise of the rest of the city.
