Bologna Walking Tour: discover Bologna on foot

The lively capital of Emilia-Romagna is one of the food and wine capitals of the Bel Paese: its cuisine has become famous all over the world and more and more tourists visit it in search of the best restaurants where to stop and taste a plate of tagliatelle with meat sauce and some slices of mortadella. The old town is full of interesting buildings and monuments and thanks to its small size it is easy to walk around without getting too tired. This is why today we tell you why a Bologna Walking Tour is the best way to explore the city.

Why discover Bologna on foot

As we were saying, the historic center of Bologna is small and cosy and it’s very easy to get around on foot (or at most by bike as the locals love to do).

So, even if you have only one day to visit Bologna, it will be easy to include the main attractions of the city in your itinerary.

Moreover, if you move on foot, you will have the possibility to stop and visit the many churches in Bologna, to stop and admire a shop window or one of the many banquets selling books under the famous arcades or, again, to stop in front of a food shop to have a sandwich prepared with mortadella or to buy a pack of tortellini to take home with you.

What to see absolutely during a Bologna walking tour

During an itinerary on foot in Bologna there are some stages that you really should not miss. Below we list our favorites.

  • Piazza Maggiore. The heart of the city overlooked by some of the most beautiful buildings in Bologna: Palazzo d’Accursio, Palazzo del Podestà, Palazzo dei Banchi and the famous Basilica of San Petronio, considered the fifth largest church in the world!
  • The Asinelli Tower and the Garisenda. The towers of Bologna are one of the distinctive features of the city. Once these had both defensive and prestigious functions. The two most important are the Asinelli Tower and the Garisenda Tower. The first one can be visited and, once you reach the top, you can admire a 360° panorama of the entire city.
  • The markets. Visiting Bologna also means getting lost among the beautiful markets of the city, rich in colors, scents and sounds. The most beautiful are the Mercato delle Erbe, the Mercato Ritrovato and the Mercato di Mezzo.

What to taste absolutely during a Bologna walking tour

Strolling around Bologna, among the stalls of its markets and among the small food stores under the arcades, it is easy to get hungry. The capital of Emilia-Romagna, as we have already said, is one of the best places where you can eat in Italy. For this reason, if during your walk you feel a bit peckish, stop to taste at least one of the delicacies that we recommend you to eat in Bologna. Among those not to be missed there are:

  • Mortadella. The most famous cold cuts in the city.

  • The tagliatelle with meat sauce. The most delicious pasta dish in Italy.
  • The Bolognese cutlet. A variation of the most famous Milanese where the meat is fried and then covered with cooked ham and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese.
